Im new, please dont rip me up. Im simply not very knowledgeable about audio. I have a 2010 a4 with an 8 inch sub woofer. I would like to replace it with another 8 inch. I feel like the next level from what i had would be something between these 2 that i have been considering.

Kicker CompRT 43CWRT81 CompRT shallow-mount 8" subwoofer with dual 1-ohm voice coils at Crutchfield.com

Alpine SWR-8D2 Type-R 8" subwoofer with dual 2-ohm voice coils at Crutchfield.com

that should also give you my price range.

I hope to power it with this

Kenwood Excelon X500-1 Mono subwoofer amplifier — 500 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms at Crutchfield.com

(im aware its refurbished, im not looking to spend a grand on all this)

If i understand things correctly, as you place speakers together it can increase the Ohms, making the Amp work harder. My first questions regarding what to purchase are:

If i feed a 1ohm speaker with dual voice coils (at 175 each - 250 rms total) with a 500 RMS based on 2ohms, will i have a problem? I feel going from 2 powering a 1 will not hurts, as i have read the opposite would hurt.

Secondly, once i have decided which speaker, i need to know how to seal it. How bad is running a sub woofer (either of the 2) in free air? My current one is running on free air but its pretty garbage. Will it hurt if i run either of these in free air? The sub woofer faces the trunk from where you would normally have the shelf below the back window. (magnet is on top) I would rather purchase the Alpine however it is so **** deep. Nearly 5 inches which i dont have (never said that before //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif ) The kicker at about 3 inches would fit almost perfectly (free air of course)

Dont get me wrong i want to seal the box, but i also want the most incognito look possible so no one knows i have an aftermarket sub. I dont know if i am missing questions. Please forgive my ignorance and feel free to treat me as a frail 90 year old that knows very little of audio.

(be gentle)

sincerely

mike
