720p tv question..?

We just picked up a blu-ray player, previously we had a Pioneer 1080p upscaling dvd player, and on our 50" LG 720p plasma you can easily tell the difference. The blu-ray version is way better watching the same movie (The Dark Knight) on the two machines. As stated before though the 360's game library is way better than the ps3's in my opinion.

westinghouse? talk about going cheap.
Many AVS forums and Videophiles would disagree with this statement. While the Westinghouse, is cheap in price, it houses some pretty stout components. It's resolution is actually rather astounding when compared to its more expensive competition.

Are you asking the difference between upscaling a DVD on the 360 compared to watching bluray on the PS3?

You will notice a difference unless you have no eye for detail. I can tell easily difference between upscale and true HD. Upscaling just matches the picture output resolution to your panels native resolution. It looks a bit better than standard DVD, but you still see compression artifacts and such.

Also you need to remember that upscaling doesnt add any more detail than what the standard DVD offers.

You wont get any of the extra picture detail offered by bluray.

Agree.... You will definetly see a difference, The PS3 will look better even when watching regular dvd's because the ps3 does a better jop "upscaling" dvd's. I have both the PS3 and the xbox360. I had a 720p tv and just upgraded to a 1080p tv for the superbowl. If you're a gamer, get the xbox360... If you are a "media" fan (music, pictures, videos, photos) get the PS3. Like i said, i have them both, But rarely use the PS3. The only time i use the PS3 is to watch pictures that i store in there, watch blue ray movies, and go online......
Note: BOTH SYSTEMS HAVE AWSOME LOOKING GAMES, BUT THE PS3 GAMES LOOK BETTER IN HD IMO.

Hope i helped:)
I just set my PS3 to the 720 resolution to try this to see for myself with my Dark Knight blu-ray (it also has a DVD Video copy with it) and needless to say I could tell a difference in the picture but I don't have that same TV so I can't really say much about it. Maybe my head/eye's are playing trick's on me lol.

You are all missing the big picture... The TV is only capable of 720P. The TV is the limiting factor, not the input device...

You WILL NOT NOTICE A DIFFERENCE. 720P is going to look like 720P, does not matter if the input is coming from a sony device or a microsoft device.

Brynm, you can only tell a difference between the upscaling DVD player and the blu ray player becaues upscaling is a load of crap IMHO. It just adds/doubles lines to attempt to fool you. DVD's are not HD devices, and upscaling is still not a true HD experience.

But as far as gaming on the two systems, 720P is going to look like 720P, doesnt matter which console.

Something I am really surprised that nobody has mentioned is the size of the TV matters. 32 or under I highly doubt you will see any difference at all. Remember 720 is the lines of resolution one way(can't remember which way but it is the lessor number)Just like perhaps not on color depth but a standard 20" def has more lines of resolution per sq inch than a 50 inch 720 p so thus having a better picture. I know on std def I couldn't tell a lot of difference in pic quality between a 27 inch and 50 inch and the 50 inch used same amount of lines so should have appeared to be extremely blurry by theory. SO I highly doubt you will see a world of difference between 720 p and 1080 unless you go over 50inches

Is 720p your TV's native resolution? If not, your test doesnt make much sense.

And LCD tv only supports one resolution (ie 720p, 1080i, 1080p). If your TV supports 1080p, and you set your PS3 to 720p, all your doing is forcing your TV to upscale the image to match its native 1080p resolution.

Everyone in this thread that said you WONT see a difference is an idiot and need to stop giving advice on TV's/Blu Ray.

No matter WHAT kind of HD TV you have, watching a Blu Ray on it as opposed to a DVD will bring a big difference in image quality. It all of course depends on the Blu Ray in question seeing as how each blu ray is encoded differently and therefore there are some high quality Blu Ray's and low quality Blu Rays. I have yet to see a Blu Ray that doesn't look at least slightly better than it's DVD counterpart but if you pop in Wall-E or The Dark Knight, you WILL see a difference, trust me.

With that said, currently an Xbox 360 CANNOT put out HD movies via Blu Ray drive (you can i believe download/rent HD movies from XBL and watch in HD but they still dont match the quality of blu ray) but, yes, if you are into movies, get the PS3. You won't be disapointed even with a lower end HD TV. Yea the colors might not be as bright as a Samsung or Sony, but 720p is 720p regardless of the TV brand.

btw save $60 for Killzone 2 it's gonna awesome.

The only movies that I heard that weren't much different were oldschool movies such as the terminator that were put on bluray.

Which isnt very surprising considering the films age.

Where'd you hear that? That statement is somewhat true, as normally you won't get the quality from an older film as you would say Transformers, but a Blu Ray version of say Goodfellas shows a BIG improvement over the DVD quality.

Like i said before if you ever have the option of DVD or Blu Ray of the same movie, go for the Blu, it WILL have better PQ (picture quality) than the DVD version and will probly have more special features/extras.

I read this in a magazine a year or two ago. This was when HD-DVD and bluray will still fighting it out and were stil very expensive.

They had screen shots comparing DVD to HD with the terminator. Didnt look much different. Then again, a screen shot isnt as good as the real thing.

I still have yet to go bluray. Im using an upscaling dvd player currently. Looks good to me. Though Im sure my opinion will change when I finally watch a movie in true HD. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

It really does look good. Do yourself a favor and get yourself an HD TV and a Blu Ray player/PS3.

Couple Blu Ray's I suggest:

Band of Brothers Box Set

Tropic Thunder

I Am Legend

Wall-E

The Dark Knight

Iron Man

just to name a few.

Don't let the haters get you down. I love my Westinghouse 37" in the bedroom. Looks as good as my Sony XBR5 46" on HD channels. Now regular cable channels, the Sony does a better job and on blu-ray it looks better.

Had the Westinghouse 2 years and not one problem besides resolution lines, but is a quick fix with the remote.

Hard to beat the prices and like them better than Vizio.
