6.5" woofer

M6+ is not recommended for use in a door without an enclosure. Trying to get deep bass out of a door that doesn't come with a big woofer is a hard task. You can't just drop in a fatty midbass and expect great results. I really wouldn't go with anything beyond HD-M6 or ES-06 if you want a CDT midbass woofer in your door.

Is that simply because of mounting depth? If I sealed off my doors pretty well, would it work? I just feel most midbass woofers I've used are lacking midbass...

No, it's not designed for use in a door. It's a subwoofer that should be treated like one that requires a small sealed or ported enclosure. Have you done everything you can possibly do to make your doors a better enclosure, including putting up a heavy barrier to block sound from coming through the door?

Sealed up, deadened, foam around the speakers... pretty much everything I could do to these doors. Tell me if this is possible.... I sealed off the polk db6501 really well... as if it were in a small enclosure, could that be why it fried?

There's always more you can do. Deadener and foam don't do much to block noise, which is what MLV is excellent for. The speakers did not blow because of what you did to the doors.

What I mean by a small enclosure is one built to the manufacturer's recommendation, should they recommend a small sealed or ported enclosure. See the tech pdf on the CDT HD-M6+ for an example. pdf

0.1 to 0.3 cu ft is a small fraction of the air space inside a deadened door.
