6.5 in 4x6 hole...? Component or co-axial?

Hey, I have an '03 cavalier (stock 4x6 in the front and 6x9 in the back) and have been reading up on several threads where people insist that 6.5's are the way to go up front. But how easy is it to make a 6.5 fit in a 4x6 area? Someone said that you'd need an mdf baffle. Is this just a sort of home made adapter to allow a different size speaker to fit in the original whole?

Also, can someone tell me the difference compare/contrast co-axials and components? I've read all about them, but haven't actually heard the difference (totally new to car audio stuff). A set of 4x6 co-axials would make the job so much easier for me, but is it worth the work to make some 6.5" components up front? I would probably go with some 2-ways... But if my car didn't come stock with tweeters, would those be a hassle?

I am planning on upgrading my stock system in a series of steps, starting with a decent head unit (probably with 2 pre-outs), then the speakers, then a 4-way amp and maybe some time down the road, a sub (and corresponding amp).

Any input on the rest of the process? I was thinking of getting a pioneer or alpine hu, I'm not sure about the speakers (maybe alpine or hifonics or kickers or something) and don't even have the slightest clue as to what sort of amp I'd get.

Any input would be greatly appreciated and seriously considered. Thanks!

Yeah, youll wanna either make or buy a 6 or 6.5 inch adapter for your 4x6t's. the conversion WOULD be worth it, a 6.5s have a MUCH larger market and you can get much better midbass. As far as Coaxial vs Component, Coaxial is better if you wanna make the job easy and throw **** in there, since the tweeter is physically mounted to the speaker. Components come with a tweeter and woofer usually, so you can mount the tweeter wherever youwant OR a lot come with a way to also mout the tweeter to the speaker so you can make it cif you want. It's pretty easy to mount a tweeter to the surface of your pllars or any surface really. for the speakers id reccomend some cadence 6.5's, best bang for your buck.

I have a o4 cavi, I am upgrading to 6.5 comps as soon as I sell my sub.(will br getting a new one). The adaptor isnt that hard to build, I can send you a pattern or pic after i build one if you want. you have to drill a hole somewhere for the tweeter but comps are worth it. What kind of budget you working with?

Thanks for the info! Sorry about the slow response... I've had to go without internet for a couple of weeks.

illadelph: I think I will go with the comps. Have you ever heard of hifonics zeus 6.5 comps? They look pretty good for the price.

Amazon.com: Hifonics Zeus ZXI6.5C 6.5-Inch 2-Way Component Speaker System (Pair): Electronics

tthaworth: If you could send me the pattern/picture, that would be great! And could you show me where you put your tweeters once you've finished, that would be awesome, too! Esp. since you also have a cavalier.. I hope your install goes well and you like your set-up.

Do you think that I need a sub? I like some strong bass with my music, but I don't really know anyone who is into car audio, so I don't know what a system would sound like with an amp and decent comps, but no sub.

I have a job lined up for this school year that should pay about $60/week, but I don't want to spend it all on my car... Basically, I'm trying to get a decent system in my car for the cheapest possible price. I don't really want to spend more than $150 on the hu (harness, antenna adapter, and install kit included... hopefully more like $120), and then

Those speakers sound like crap! please don't get those. As far as the adaptors i have decided to get these instead of making some.

If you want strong bass than u need a sub . Focus your money on a good set of componets up front and forget about the 6x9 in the rear, unless you just want a cheap set for rear fill. PM me and i can help you set up a system
