500W amp enough to power a 4 ohm 500W RMS sub?

JL is not the Walmart of car audio. They make decent quality stuff. It may cost more that other brands. But they are a quality company with a good warranty, and they don't make their stuff in China, like most of the stuff as Walmart.

OP.. For a modest 300 watt sub and amp, we could have helped you get something cheaper that would sound just as good, but it doesn't really matter in the end, at least you ended up getting something decent instead of buying a bunch of chrome ebay crap like many people do on their first go around.

OP, I would return that sub if you can. Nothing wrong with the sub at all, but you're paying too much for what you'll get. There are a tone of other companies that build equipment with the same or better quality. JL can charge more because of the name. The W3v3 is a decent sub, but it's pretty middle-of-the-road as far as sound quality and output. $350 for that sub and a pre-fab box is pretty pricey.

There are a few vendors on this site (see the "supporting vendors" section on the forum home page) that can build a box to fit your needs, your sub, and your vehicle. If you're going to spend that amount of money, at least make sure you get your money's worth.

Oh, it'll sound good. Just not $350 good.
Hell, even sticking with the (overpriced) W3, he could have gotten the sub and a custom enclosure for about $60 less.

12" Subwoofers

For the price he paid, you could probably get a used 12" Fi Q and a decent 1000w amp. The Q is probably better compared to a W6, which is really the only JL sub I'd consider buying (but not for the $400 you see them for new online).

easy, bro...OP commented on the number of shops that have a JL sticker on the door...I was just agreeing. BTW, how did u know I bought that 1000 watt Chrome Bazooka amp with a bad channel for 75 bucks off e bay a few years back??...LOL...I will never use ebay again. CL is the ****, you can haggle and demo..or walk away.
