I think some people here are viewing the alternator as a constant DC source when it is turning. NO. It is a three phase generator with a three phase bridge rectifier (Internal or external, etc), and it relies on the battery to filter it into a smoothed DC. In theory applying a capacitor of the sort(Battery) to the terminals of the alternator will smooth some of the ripple under a high load.
