500amps to much

Nt neccesairly. It depends on the vehicle,if its a big 350 or something like that no prob.A little 3.1l V6 maybe so.The point is its just impractical. No one makes an alt that big, only way its done is with dual alts. Not one big one:crazy:
there are some that large

300 @ idle

500 @ or around 1800rpm

they are under the hood of ambulances, fire trucks, etc....

and the size of a cinder block

^^^I know of the ambulance ones but there no bigger then 350-400A at most from what I have seen.

Like I said its just impractical on a daily vehicle to have a single alt pushing that much current, output at idle would be poop!

why would the output at idle be bad? that makes no sense

For one no one makes a 500A alt.Two if they did it would have shit for out put at idle.
1.) Iraggi 500 Amp Alternator for the Ford 4.6 or 5.4L motors. I am sure you could use it on something else w/ a custom bracket. he claims 200 amps at edle. /shrug http://www.caraudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=407731

As far as only needing enough alt to charge the battery's I disagree. Unless you just bang with the car off. I think it's reversed, You need batterys to make up for lack of alt. When your car is running you are running off of alt power not battery power.

He said it's an Eclipse. I don't care which engine option he has in there it will fall on it's face trying to turn an alt that large.

That is not true. A few things do run off the alternator like headlights, but all main power distribution is done through the battery.

As far as alt vs. battery they are pretty much both important but depends not only only peak current draw but avg draw as well.

Yes, but the alternator is charging the battery while the vehicle is on. Therefore the alternator is providing the current, until it's max output is exceeded. Then the system will drop to battery voltage and the battery will supply remaining current needed. This is obviously on a second-to-second basis.

A car will run longer with no alternator than it will with no battery...

Im pretty sure I wasnt disputing the fact that the alternator supplies the battery with current, but you can also use a charger or an inverter. There is no substitute for a battery.

uhhh... if a car is strictly running off of batt power, it will only run until the battery dies.... if it is strictly running off alternator power, it will run until the gas tank is empty
