I was under the impression that an amp required running new wire for the speakers.. It's really just a matter of plugging the old wires into the amp is if it were a HU, then adding connections to the battery and HU?
Also, if I'm not going to be turning up the volume too loud, is it even worth it?

You re-use stock factory wiring thats all you need. More power can bring out midbass and midrange in your music for overall sound quality. Power is not just about getting loud. It helps your sound quality by a lot too.
