4 channel amp

you can bridge 2 of the channels into one. but the other channels remain unused
Not if he's got a DVC 4 Ohm sub he can't....the vast majority of multichannel amps aren't stable below 4 Ohms when in bridged configuration.

Hence me asking what I asked as that's a much more sensible starting point when you take into consideration there are far too many "ifs" with the vague info we have at this point.

im not sure my stepdad gave me the amp no manula but i found the manual online it says 4x50w@4 ohms 90wx4@2ohms 180wx2@4 ohms and it says 1 ohm stable on it

Ok.

Rated for 180w/channel in bridged mode.

You're not going to be able to use all 4 channels to drive a single subwoofer so you're going to need to look for a single voice coil driver whose voice coil is a nominal 4 Ohm coil with an RMS rating of 150-200w for that amp to power it.

You can then use the other two channels that are left unused to power a frontstage.

Not a great solution but with what you have to work with it's what you have to work with.

A dual 2 ohm VC'ed driver will most likely be easier to find...and unless you're already running something for your front stage, why waste a perfectly good amplifier to only power half the system?

i guess ill problay get 2 subs then and have to spend some more .what wattage should i look for in the subs like peak power and and continous power handling.
If you're going to use your existing amp for two subs then each sub will need to be in the range of 150~200w RMS (RMS = continuous power handling)Peak power ratings are good for nothing more than marketing purposes and as such can be ignored.

forget peak power. look for something in the 150-300 watt rms range. dual 2 ohm or signal 4 ohm. not the greatest to run subs in stereo cause you'll loose your fade and balance. i'd suggest getting a small mono amp

I mean, it is your money, but your way will a) cost more and b) not sound anywhere near as balanced.
