4 12's or 2 15's

if u really want my opinion.....neither....its alot of factors involved when it comes 2 which is louder.....4 example in the rite box i can have 3 ten that would smkoe both 4 12's or 2 15's.....but its all in the install

80

hmmm i was wondering what would be louder everyone always tell me to buy 15's but i think the 4 12's would be better and louder so what are your opinions on this

If the x-max parameters of a given 12 and 15 were exactly equal then based on sheer Sd (cone area) here's what you'd have:

typical 12" driver Sd = 420 cm^2

typical 15" driver Sd = 810 cm^2

So (4) X 420 = 1680 cm^2

and (2) X 810 = 1620cm^2

Really and truly this situation is a toss up because the 15's will be potent because of sheer cone area and excursion, whereas the 12's would be equally as loud because of sheer quantity. Personally I am a 15" subwoofer kind of guy (most recently I have become an 18" guy). You will probably be able to have a much smaller box with the 15's whereas the 12's are gonna need a bit bigger box. I guess it really depends on what you have the room to do?

I can answer this question, based on the fact that right now I have 4 12s in my car, and I just got rid of my 15s. If both setups are in their correct sql/ spl box, and both are ran off the same power, then the 12s should win hands down. I did this, and my 12s destroyed my 15s off the same power, and both being in their reccomended boxes.

This is not entirely true. Most alot of 15s require a box twice the size as the same 12. This exact situation happend in my case. In all it equaled out to the same cubic feet.

I guess I know pretty much nothing about SPL then. The number that is in my signature was achieved with a box (for an 18" RE MT) that is 6 cubes net.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I never said you didnt know anything about spl. I will say this though. Looking in some of my owners manuals of previous subs, the 15s went in boxes that required twice the air spaces as the 12s did. Thats all im saying. Im talking about the recommended boxes that the manufacturer suggested.

I don't really go by manufacturer's specs simply because I am not looking for the same thing they are. There is indisputable proof that 15's get louder than 12's. Yes they require more airspace, but you get more output for your money.
