i just installed a bunch of intercom speakers at work and the way i had to wire them, one was forced to be wired to receive 4 watts while all the others were seeing 2 watts. this is in a fairly large room with over 10 speakers total and i figured it wouldn't be much of a problem...

so, how perceivable is 3dbs? do you think the one speaker will stand out?

i think what your getting at is doubleing spl is 10x the power. but i dont think that one is true

^either way it will get quieter at like 3dbs per meter^2 i think is the right equation. so not really

5db is twice as loud 10db is 3x as loud, there is a huge diff in 135db and 145db

Would you think eventually doubling the power would 'hit a wall' in terms of actually getting twice as loud?...because im just thinking about how scientists follow Einstein and say that the speed of light is technically impossible to achieve because the ship would grow infinitely large because as things speed up they grow larger (and the speed of light would mean the ship/object would be infinitely large)...or so the theory goes with Einstein..and it also deals with doubling the energy (like in this situation) to go twice as fast (or twice as loud like in this instance)

So, just thinking about that situation made me wonder if there is eventually something that simply doesn't allow it to be that easy...

Depends on the scale. Using an A weight, a change in 10dB is perceived as twice/half as loud....which is close to how the ear works.

Basically, the difference between the softest sound we can detect and the loudest sound we can tolerate is 1,000,000:1....which is 120 dB.

I see what youre saying, but I mean as we get louder and louder by doubling power is there eventually a 'catch' much like the speed of light theory would you think..? (and besides the fact that around 192 db, i believe, things move out of the realm of sound and simply become a pressure wave)

The inner ear has a 50 dB dynamic range, but, as stated we can hear over a 120 dB range in intensity. This is because the ear will compress to protect on a 4:1 ratio. It will only let so much in as SPL increases, basically.

All this talk of SPLs, aren't the comp people getting close to the threshold between a sound and what is technically considered a shockwave? It's 191dB, right?
