3 10" subs or 1 18" sub

I'm searching for new ideas on my setup. I just had a single 18 on 2k and it was stupid loud in a 6.5cuft box, but it fried and I'm moving on to something different this time. I had an idea of going with 3 mid level 10s like HX2s or DC lvl 3s, and giving them about 5cuft@33hz and 2k total power to the triplets.

Do you guys think that the 10s will get louder in a daily setup out of a large trunk car as opposed to the single 18? I need responses asap, as I plan on buying this week, or next

Cone area for the 10's would be 235.5", the 18 has 254.34. With the same power, your 18 SHOULD be louder... This is assuming you were using the same subs, which is another variable.

The 18 would more than likely be an HDC3, a Crossfire hybrid, or something similar, and the 10s will be either HX2s or something in that power requirement area(5-700 rms).

Is it volume you want? The 18" will go lower....Not necessarily louder..The 10's will move faster than the 18.yet the 18 will go loud. Plus, every vehicle has a different type of acoustics. Remember, don't make 3 10's do the work do the work that 2 15's may do so much better...Alpine50

Yeah the Cone Area plus most 18s are usually more efficient then 10s
Sensitivity (1W/1m)

DC Level 3 10s are 84.7dB

AQ HDC3 18 is 89.8dB
Yeah, I feel you on that.

what he said...plus, single sub setups are ***.
They are very sexy;).

I think that in my trunk, the 10s will have more room to allow the sound to get back into the car over the 18. My trunk is 19" high at the largest point, and 50wide. The box for my 18 would be 19high, and 43wide, not leaving me much room to work with. Would the difference in the ability for the sound to get around the box better with the 10s help them get louder than the 18? I really can't go any larger than 6-7cuft with my subs firing back, so I'm sure I'm loosing efficency with the smaller box, and my CSX never really got low even with 34hz tuning. My TC9 12 with 35hz tuning was a lot lower than the 18

fyi , does not change the answer, but give or take....

10" cones are more like 7" diameter

18" cones are more like 15" diameter

and 3 voice coils are generally going to handle more power than 1 if they are similar sizes.

As soon as I read that I new somebody would have to jump on it!

Back to the question. Wouldn't the added motor force make up for and area lose also the less chance of thermalling and lower chance of compression. And the hole efficiency thing is kinda hard to go by. Considering the manufacture took the Highest reading at the loudest note for that sub. Which in your setup may not be the loudest note. So in fact that would change the efficiency of the sub. Or I maybe talking out ma arse:crap:

I kinda thought that the added motors and least chance of compression would stand for something, but I had to ask since I'm a simi-noob

one 18 ftw
The 18 will more than likely be an 05 XXX, vs 3 HX2 10s, both on 2000w. The XXX will be in 6.6cuft@33hz rear firing, and the 10s would be in 5.8cuft@34hz rear firing also. The 10s will actually be getting a little more than 2K, since they'll be on my amp @.67ohms.

The XXX will most likely be deeper, but will it be louder, since HX2s are very capable subs
