2001 ford taurus head unit (sigh)

Can somebody explain the Taurus stereo to me. I don't see why you can't just start from scratch and install all new components and not worry about the "brain" in the truck area. If you replace the head unit, speakers and added an amp you shouldn't have to worry about any stock component right?

the " head unit" in the dash is just a display/ control unit.. the gut's and the tuner are back there in the trunck.

just buy the harness and the dash kit. run the harness back to the brain. install the dash kit. and aftermarket headunit.. it's nothing close to the rocket sience you guys are turning this into....
