1998 Jimmy Audio Question

I currently own a 1998 Jimmy, 4x4. If I recall the count, it has 6 speakers (I think those on the dash are speakers).

Anyway, I'm probably going to keep it for at least another year. So I want to get a new audio system. Now, I'm not looking for a booming window shattering sound, I like the volume of the stock unit.

But, it has no CD player, and I haven't had good luck using a cassette adapter with a cd/mp3 player. Plus, I think one or 2 of the speakers are failing.

Is it possible to get a decent sound, using the existing locations for the head unit and speakers? If so, does anyone have an idea on the specs to look for. As in, dimensions, wiring requirements?

I could probably install them myself, if I had a guide on how to do it, if I didn't have to run new wires. I'm a quick learner and good with my hands.

Basically, I'm looking for a cd (possibly mp3 cd capable) unit, and the correct speakers needed. Again, not going for a big sub box and all that, just a basic decent sounding system (my mom has a 04 Grand Am and it sounds pretty good and it's a stock cd player unit).

Is this possible? I may decide to have the work done by a professional, I know circuit city does that kind of work, but are they reliable?

Any help would be appreciated.

I was looking on Crutchfield (first site I came across that dealt in this) and put in my car's info, and it said the head units were compatible and would fit. But I don't know much about the wattage and all that. And the speakers, I got totally lost in. Little clue as to what exactly I need for this vehicle.

yea, looking at that site again, I see it says:

In dash stereo: 5 7/16" depth Size code E

Front speakers: Dash 4x6, Front door, 6 1/2"

Rear speakers: Rear door, 6 1/2"

Bad thing is, it says none match the size exactly. Looking at a video they had on there, it doesn't look TOO difficult to replace the head unit/stereo. I could do that certainly. I'm sure I could do the speakers too, but I don't know what it means when none match exactly. I see plenty of 6.5" inch speakers on there.

Anyway, it sounds like the front/rear are the same speaker.
