18XXX vs. 15 ED A

Hey all, new to the forum, and this is for a friend... I already know the XXX will be louder/deeper, but what were wondering is that since there's such a price difference, is the 18 still worth it? He has a Planet Audio 2250.1 and that seems like it would suit the 18 better. Another thing were looking at is box sizes and which to go with. He has a 90 Eclipse hatchback so there's not a ton of space. Which sub would be better suited for sealed, and which for ported (if not both). RE's site isn't very informative yet, probably because of the new design and getting that all put together. In other words, spill as much as you know about both :thumbsup . Anyways, thanks for the help in advance.

BTW, a bit about my setup... I drive a black 89 F-150 single cab, running 2 sealed Elemental Design 10 O's, fed by a Planet Audio 850.1, and my HU is a Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X759. Door speakers are next to be replaced hopefully w/ a 3-say comp set including kickpanels, but for now they're 13 yr old JVC's ran offa 50W coustic amp (sounds decent for how old they are, hehe). Hope that made sense //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif .

Hey whatup.

That Planet Audio puts how out much? Like 2kw+ right? The A just can't handle that much power, so that elminates that sub. Unless, what does that amp do @ 4ohms?

The 18 needs a BIG ported box, and a still big sealed box. I would try the 15XXX. Honestly, after hearing both, I would say they really are pretty close is "deepness" and both pound like none other. Go with a 15XXX, sounds SO close in deepness, and is pretty close in SPL.

eDA sealed or ported, they like small boxes, but your amp might be too much power, Im not familiar with those amps. The A will take bout 1-1.2kw from what I have taken from people familiar with it. I personally don't have any playtime with one.

XXX-the 18 takes up way too much room.Simple. I have played with a 18XXX and 15XXX. 18xxx box- 8cubes 30hz. 15xxx box-6 cubes 34hz/2 cubes sealed. In my ported box the 15 sounded as deep as the 18,I could tell when I would play late night tip and the sound would emphasize on the same notes. However, the 18 had a more of "rumbling" and "vibrating" bass to it and the 15 had a more of "the air will eat your body alive" feeling. It seemed the 15 had crazy air pressure in the car, and the 18 would just vibrate you like a good massage. Both are crazy in SPL. I would take the 15 because of your small space.18-2kw 15-1.5kw(For wattage refrence)

Yea so that's basically a summary of what I know with those subs. Only sub I've ever heard that was deeper was the 18MT..psh omfg. Anyway yea, someone will chime in on the edA15. I am in no way saying this is a bad or inferior sub, it's just I am ASSUMING that amp pushes over 2kw and I know that A will have more trouble taking it than the XXX will. BUT the A will be better suited for a smaller box. Just like a D2 would be..

i say a single 12 would still be loud in a small car. 15" require boxes which are pretty large.
What do you know about that? PSH don't listen to this guy, he doesn't know anything! *smooches*

Well can you lend your experience with your 15A to the table, cuz that would help him.

Oh I agree a 12 would be loud in a small car, just that he wanted a 18 and I figured the 15 sealed w/ bout 2kw would be REAL nice.

Thanks for the info guys. Ok, so it looks like were shootin for a sealed box now, due to space. What size of a box could I get the 15xxx in and throw like 2250W at it, and would it be able to handle it? I'd go look up the other ohm wattage loads, but I gotta head to work. Oh, BTW, he has a 12a right now that some kid is buying offa him for just as much as he got it for, and he wants to fully use him amplifiers abilities (if possible). Thanks...later.
