180 amp alt

I'm trying to figure what kind of rms i could run with a 180 amp alt. That's the highest amperege alt i can get for my car thats a direct bolt on. Isn't there a furmula to figure the amps needed for your system or am I crazy? I want ~3k rms, But I think that might be pushing it.
