16-17 volts

i have a 1991 ford explorer and i have a soundstream 3500d and i've been told that amp works best at 16-17 volts. so how can i get my ride up to 16-17? i'm going to do the big 3 upgrade and get a new alt. if my amp doesnt get 16-17 volts all the time will it cause the amp to go in to protect mode and not come out until it gets the volts it needs?
