some subs or subwoofer companys you should look at are:

treo engineering

resonant engineering

adire audio

mmats

atomic thunder

cerwin vega stroker

digital designs

image dynamics

and a nice ammount of power to push them...

I say:

SW9152Pro - Eclipse 15" Titanium Pro Subwoofer

and

Orion XTR PRO2400

if you look around enough, it is doable under $1500

That's about the exact same budget I had to work with when I started building my set up.

So far I've gotten:

Alpine CDA-9813

(1) E12A

(1) Avionixx 800.2

And I'll have enough left over to get a decent set of front speakers and probably a small amp.

and a new battery is also needed sometimes...its still doable if he can get the alternator and install it himself.

but dont forget sound dampening either...

Get a new orion h2... They should prove to be above the rest, some claim better than jl, fosgate, bahn, blah blah. u name it they SUposedbly don't quote me the best in the game and yes they are spl subs..

Depends on the organization. Usually when it comes to street in db drag, you just need to charge your batteries the night before because the car can't be running while in the lanes.

wekk, when iu went to a db drag comp...you could have ur engine running. Couldn't not be above 2000 rpms...AND if he's looking for a comp setup...just get a red top under the hood...and possibly a beefy yellow top in the back (maybe not) and just make sure thes batteries can take the burp! REMEMBER...it's just a burp...like a few seconds! There was a guy at the last comp w/ 2 rfl's and 3 81000d's on a STOCK metro electrical system...(maybe a new battery, but nothing special...and only 1 battery) It took it fine for the burp...took a huge *** voltage hit...but still got 156.8 peace
