Hi guys,

I just upgraded my "big 3" in preparation for my excessive amperage 180 amp alt. and my voltage went up at idle from 14.3-14.6 to 15.2 volts! my voltmeter in my car has a range from 9 on the low side to 19 on the "danger" high side. So as long as its within these limits its ok right? thanks

It's a little high, but shouldn't be a problem.

I had my 75A alt die and replaced it w/a 110A that was out of a car a year newer than mine, but was a direct blot-on/plug-in. My voltage idles at 15.2-15.4. It's been like that for over a year and has given me no problems.

Yeah I have the same thing going on in my rig now. I have 14.6-14.8 to the battary under the hood, and 15.4-15.8 to the battary in my cargo area.

Being that The batt in the cargo area is a yellow top I am not worried.

+ My amps are not at all starving for power:D .

yea, I wish I had that. my alt runs at 13v or less, its freaked up. Gotta get a new amp, but im going to just have another alt re-wound to higher amperage, and save my money in buying an alt from excessive amperage until I get a new car.

youll just be getting that rewound alt rewound again, when you rewind a stock alt to a higher amperage, usually cooling isnt taken into consideration. It will run hotter and the other stock parts wont be able to handle the load. Do it right the first time.

Except that I will be getting a new car within the next 6 months. I think it useless to buy a 250 dollar alt specific to a car that im not going to have very much longer, id rather spend 120 right now to get me through until my new car. But thanks for the heads up. Ill ask this local guy about heat issues.

i wouldnt even bother getting it rewound if your gonna have it for that short of a time. go to the junk yard and find an alternator and youll probably save some money.

thanks everyone for your input. After about 15 mins of having the car idle it suddenly dropped down to 14.7 volts and has stayed that way all night. The only thing I can think of is maybe it was a little higher after I reconnected my batt before my computer reset itself? thanks again all!

Just becareful your cars electrical system doesnt exceed that 15.4V, thats where things start to blow up. Most H/U's are rated for that as the maximum amount of allowed voltage

I wouldnt be to concerned if it was wired to an amp.

GM alts run that high sometimes, just how it works. Its typical... and voltage *should* go down as the car/alt warms up.

No worries there... most likely you just had some crappy crappy wire in the first place.

I swapped it out with a stock alt in a cavilier and screwed that one up as well. Thats the one I have in my car right now. My stock one is siting on my back floor. SO I dont know, all I know is that my alt condidtion sucks and I dont want to waste money for an alt with this car. Id run them dual if I had any room in my engine bay, but I dont.

BTW Moe, the pic u had in your sig before your current pic, where it showed your voltage meter, do u know if that feature is on the DEH-P860MP?
