100% noob needs your opinion!

Shop around man. Don't be scared to buy used at all.

I've been working on a budget setup for my girlfriend's neon. You could do something similar to keep the costs way down. It's going to help big time that you already have a H/U deck.

Here is my budget setup:

Sub: Soundstream SPL Mule 12" = $20 (surprisingly loud)

Amp: Soundstream Reference 500 = $150 (old school power & clarity)

Wiring: KnuKonceptz 4 gauge = $35 (great kit with the KLM wire)

Box: 3/4" MDF, Insulation, Silicon, Liquid Naild, Carpet, etc = $40

Total: $245

amplifiers put out different watts at different ohm loads. depending on what ohm load your amplifier is stable running at you should buy subs that will equal an ohm load to match the amplifier. If you have an amplifier that is 500 watts @4 ohms you need to buy a sub that is either a single 4ohm or a dual 2 ohm.

Another question..what's it talking about when it says like "300 @ 2 Ohms" or "500 @ 4 Ohms"
What do I need to know about Ohms?
ohms is the resistance. This doesn't mean that it's bad to have higher resistance or lower resistance. It just makes it easier to wire something up according to the ohm of the subs and the power that it puts out.

What you are talking about is power that the amps make at a certain impedance/resistance.

Let's say you have a dual 4ohm subs, you can actually wire that to either 8ohms or 2ohm, depending on how you wire it and get an amp that match the power either at 8 or 2ohm and power it accordingly.

Now take another sub that is a single voice coil sub and is a single 4ohm driver. Because of it being single voice coil, you only have one option and that is to wire the sub to the amp at 4ohm.

Remember, it's important to know how many ohms your speakers are running at so that you can get an amp that can run at that impedance. If you have an amp running stable at 2ohm and wire your sub at 1ohm then you can probably kiss that amp goodbye.

Also, running an amp higher than its rated impedance is ok, just not a good idea to run it lower. Hope that helps somewhat

Edit: while i typed all that up people summed it up in one paragraph //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

Haha....I was thinking the same thing. But you did a good job!

I did a budget sub, amp setup.

Still waiting on it to get shipped.

2 Pioneer Premier 12" Championship series 400rms.

1 Autotek 1000rms amp on subs.

I had a sealed box with the recommened air space for the subs. If going sealed and having a shop do it, looking at 50-75 bucks or a custom ported box, over 100 some.

I spent 260 shipped from onlinestereo.com, who I have done business with many times.

Also don't be leary buying stuff used. Just ask a lot of questions, look for pics with user names and try to deal with people that have been here for awhile, although I have been lucky with some newer people.

Good luck!
