10 vs. 12

i am looking for a box for my ext. cab silverado to go under the back seat. i really like the outward firing boxes, but the biggest sub that will fit in them are 10s. i can fit 12's in a downfiring box, but i kinda like to see the subs. are 12's that much better than 10's? if so, what are the differences? i was looking at mb quart premium series if i could get them to fit. if not, then probably the reference series.

i forgot to include a question: i am pretty sure that i can fit the premium series 10's with no problem, but im not sure about the 12's. i can fit the reference series 12's. would the reference series 12's outperform the 10's? the only real difference i have had people tell me between 10's and 12's is that 12's play lower. but dosnt almost all subs play lower than humans can hear anyway?

The average human ear can hear frequencies down to 20 hz, if we heard frequencies any lower we could hear our muscles and body organs working. But what you want to pay attention to on the subs is the frequency response, usually the bigger the sub gets the lower it will go, also the bigger sub will sound deeper and richer in bass the 12 in most cases will be noticebly boomier than the 10" so if you can fit the 12s go with them.

The 12's have the potential to get louder at low frequencies than the 10's because they can move more air. Resonant frequency and enclosure determine how low the sub will play, not its size. Transient response does not have anything to do with speaker size either.
