hey guys i have a 5 channel amp that does 475 watts into the sub channel..im going with alpine type r's 10's..i have the space..but im wondering what will give me the best output? 1 sub rated at 500 watt rms getting 475 watts or 2 subs rated at 500 watts rms getting about 238 watts a piece?

He's saying that you will get better output with the lower power with a bigger box. Theoretically, doubling the cone area (i.e.- going with the pair) on the same power is +3db's, so you will have better output with the pair. And the point he was trying to make is that you can also add output by going with a larger box to make up for the lack of power.

nah cant upgrade..tight on cash and dont want to go thru adding alt, batteries..all that stuff..im basically doing a 5 channel amp for space and money issues..i do have space for 2 10's but i wont ever upgrade the amp or anything..so im always going to be sitting on 475 watts

In that case, your still better off with 2. can you get the same impedance for 2 as from 1?

yeah i can, i was actually hoping to wire my components at 4 ohms and then my sub channel at 2 ohm, to get 750 watts out of it but thats not possible with the amp..im going with the hifonics Zeus ZXi60.4 + 1K..i already have the components in hand so its too late to go 2 ohms..so i have to go with 4 ohms

# 4 ohms: 60 watts x 4 chan. + 475 watts x 1 chan.

# 2 ohms: 120 watts x 4 chan. + 750 watts x 1 chan.

# 1 ohm Mono: 1000 watts x 1 chan. (5th Channel Only)

wait quick question, can i wire the speakers at 4 ohms and the sub channel 2ohm?
Yes. The channels are independant of each other. You can wire them however you want. If your sub channel is 1ohm stable you can have it run at 1 and the others at 4.

The 4 channel section and the sub section are independent of each other. You could run a pair of subs that wire to 1 ohm and give them 500 a piece if that amp will do rated on the sub section.
