I just got an 05 GMC z71 crew cab. I want to go ahead and upgrade the audio first. Are there any good prefabbed boxs for these trucks? Where can I get the adapter to use the steering wheel controls on an aftermarket cd player? Last, is there any way to make an aftermarket cd player work with the dim control wheel? thanks

My Q-logic box fits perfectly under my rear seat (I’ll get you the model # later), you didn’t mention if your have a crew or extended cab. I know it’s not the best but it works good enough for me. I think your going to have problems getting any aftermarket H/U to work with your steering wheel controls. Good luck!

for all of your dash messages to work "Low Fuel", "Buckle Passenger", "Check Engine", You have to keep the stock HU hooked up bc that is where that part of the computer is.

My friend had to do this in his '04 chevy crew. But if you dont want your dash messages to work than you dont have to leave it hooked up.

I have a 2004 chevy silverado, and i have a aftermarket HU and all of my messages still work, all you need to get is that data retetion harness, it is rather expensive, but it works, also most of the new alpines will work with most factory steering wheel controls, i think all you need is an adapter

there are other ways to get around that.

i forgot what module mine is, but i will take a look. the thing that happens with the 05's, is the computer in the truck thinks that the radio is missing and you start to lose things. the most common thing lost is the door chimes and audible alerts. there is a harness or module of some sort to get around that. as for the steering wheel controls, soundgate makes a module called the remote6 that works with most major head unit brands.

no i wouldnt, thats why i wouldnt leave the stock HU hooked up....take it out and dont buy an expensive adapter when you can easily use the handy remote control that comes with many of the higher end HU's

Thanks for the help. I ended up not getting the truck and having them do a dealer trade to get the color I want. It doesnt have the steering wheel controls.
