External crossovers. Are they good to add to installs?

Who uses crossovers with amps and h/u's with crossovers already on them? I heard that if you use an external crossover with amps that already crossovers built in it will hurt the amp. But I have seen an external crossover add extra bass as well, but he hasnt had it installed that long. So is it...

Does this amp really push 3000 watts at 1 ohm or would a jbl 1200.1 be better. I have never had a power acoustik amp, but when I had my jbl 600.1 it pushed at 775 watts. My boy trying to decide which one to get, he running 4 solo-baric l5's at 2 ohms.
