North Carolinans upset that they may have to foot their own bills:

• North Carolina received $35.4 billion in the 2024 fiscal year in federal grants, including $30 billion to state and local governments for education, workforce development, child care and more; and about $5 billion to individuals (e.g. SNAP benefits, Pell Grants).

This is almost $18 Billion more than North Carolina contributed to the federal coffers.
Every taxpayer is receiving government assistance to live there.

That's ridiculous. Clearly wealthy citizens in NC aren't "receiving gov't assistance.". Additionally, the net difference in fed income taxes paid vs fed funds received is a poor metric. For example, NC houses Ft Bragg, Camp Lejune & MCAS Cherry Point. Virginia for example, is a crazy net tax recipient because of all the Federal services housed there. Hawaii is another example, with their small population vs Pearl Harbor & other military installations.

Measuring something like Medicare/welfare recipients would be slightly better metric, but still flawed as poor people will flee expensive blue cities/states for more affordable rural areas.
