What makes you think I assume everyone with dark skin is African American (even though all dark skin is ultimately traced back to that continent)? I don't call my Jamaican friend African American. He's Jamaican American. I don't call my Chinese coworker Japanese simply because she has Asian features.
I grew up very close to what is/was considered the melting pot of the US. There are very few nationalities I have not encountered. And I respect the heritage each person has.
