Featured Wired subs wrong, smoke....

I got 2 new 1 ohm subs. Meant to wire into 1 ohm in series, but put jumper wire on both subs from ground to positive on same coils. Subs were smoking within minutes. All coils still ohm out at 1ohm, I dont see burn marks...but the coils are coated black from factory, no noise or weird behavior when I press down on the cones, but both still smell burnt 16 hours later.

Do both need to be reconed or since there is no mechanic noise and they ohm out they should be fine?

Whatever happened its a binary solution set at this point, they'll work or they wont.

Check continuity and if it looks ok...

I'd just match loading to your amp and try again. Try to series the coils not dead short them, I did that once with a FU audio 15 awhile back, it smoked and survived. Well... until I clipped it to death. I guess I let all the smoke out that time... haha

Rewired it properly, ohm checked, turned down gain and ran it up just a little and let it sit on a 40hz test tone for 5 minutes and got no smoke. I will set the gain tomorrow night and see if they smoke when pushed.

Any sub has limits, even 100lb monsters. Keep your signal clean, set your gains carefully and be cognizant of the warning signs when pushing it and back off at that point. I've pushed my gear up to the point I was nervous about just turning it off, so I lowered the volume while keeping those coils moving just to cool off.
And yes, it was well into clipping for some time just to get there but those slapping wipers were mesmerizing.
Just because your subs are solox doesn't mean they're indestructible, using any system is a learning process. Don't expect to just send it on day one without consequence

Thanks for the advice and tips. I always turn it down when I smell anything, but I never knew it was good to keep them moving to help them cool down.

Remember that they need to be broken in. Also, new subs will stink and maybe even smoke the first time they get pushed hard. I have very old subs that I had not pushed hard before start to smoke when pushed to their RMS rating. Some call it "cooking" the glue/film.
Thanks for the info. It was a nerve racking situation to see smoke rolling behind me and being on the interstate with no where to pull off for 2 miles and just hoping there wasn't flames somewhere.
