sue me, its a ford.
I have an old road thunder 2200x, has anybody used one bridged on subs? I know most of the old school MTX amps were underrated, some quite drastically...

Says on the bottom cover:

@12.5 volts, 4ohm, 1% thd= 400w rms

@14.4 volts, 4ohm bridged 1% thd= 425w 'dynamic'  IHF 202 rated

Amp has 60a of onboard fusing

Can I expect 500w RMS? Your opinion? Not much info online. Thanks

Mitek did underrate their flagship stuff, and short of Xtant, MTX was their flagship. if i was to guess, 450 would be a good approximation

edit: just saw that you registered 12.5 years ago and have over 13000 posts. sorry to reply with stuff you already probably knew

1. This thread is from 2019.
2. WTF are you talking about. Road thunder amplifiers barely did rated power. That amplifier wouldn’t do 850 watts if it was struck by lightning.

Yes I see it is an old thread....

I liked MTX and the older ones would do rated power as far as I've seen, but the 2200x is a 400w amp and not very big, class AB to boot, I bet 400 to 450 watts would be in its real ballpark output right at the edge of clipping. The 2300x was bigger amp, the Dyno video shows it easily did over rated at 850+ watts (rated at like 600), but I highly doubt the 2200x would do 850, it’s a much smaller amp in the Road Thunder line.

Tony D was behind designing the amp dyno so I feel pretty confident it’s pretty accurate and the MTX amps always seem to Dyno above rated. I had a bunch of the smaller MTX amps back in the day that did great, and a 6500D and the bigger 1501D and all performed really well. That 1501D from 2002 was a beast for a 1000w rated amp, although small by today’s standards.

That said, I agree that the 2200x no way does 850 watts.

Mtx Nuthuggers rejoice... halleluiah. Never once did I encounter a Mtx amplifier that outperformed a simple Punch amp, That said when hi current became a thing MTX seemed to Elvis out. I had 2 50x2's that delivered 1200w loaded nominally ea but voltage and reserve added some extra. The 50x2's im talking about are legit Af.
Find a pair of Audio Art 100HC's

Mtx tried but...

As to your question... Road Thunder amp output?

Really?

Is the RT2200x a Thunder 225HO or any cheater amp, NO!

I would compare the RT2200x to any 60 amp fused MTX amp of that era, the gold/black 2150x, brick 1650(more I'm sure but those are what I have experience with).

My old school butt would say 60 amp fuses equals 600 watts, however it's likely under that but over it's stated rate. The RT2200(30amp) is roughly half of the RT2200x(60amp) and the two often gets confused, especially on eBay. **((just my guess!!!))**

My current system is a 12' Skar vvxx something rated "600 rms", don't laugh it's a work van. I had a Thunder 1650 pushing it but swapped it out to a RT2200x. No noticeable change as far as volume but the RT2200x just has a better sound to it. Changing the system up and the whole Thunder 240, 280, 1650 and 2300 line are going to be retired to the shelf. Getting two Kicker CompR 8's and gonna see what the RT2200x does to them, mids and highs will get an Eclipse EA4100

The RT2200x's are not as bad as some say but not as great as others say.

I know I'm bumping a bump of an old thread but I just happened to wonder down this rabbit hole tonight.
