Is that shiny bright coil I see in there?

Indeed. I think it was a combination of taking a low budget "high power" amp, not calibrating the system and cranking the gains/bass boost to get the 'volume' desired.

Since the coil is fine it would seem to me that the damage was caused by a bad solder joint where the tinsel leads meet the coil leads... An area of high resistance along this line will create alot of heat.. and you can clearly see the hot spot origionated where the tinsel leads enter the driver..

I would chalk this one up to a manufacturing defect... just my $.02

A client swung by to drop off his IXL-10's to figure out what went wrong...

Needless to say, he will be getting an SPL-15 and looking for an amp that delivers solid output. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

The tinsels still appear to be attached to the terminals. The loose ends are coming from the cone.

The customer just over-excurted the sub and snapped the tinsels clean off the cone.

If the leads broke off and shorted you would get a couple sparks and the amp would go into protect.. it wouldn't start a fire from inside of the sub...

I can say almost with 100% certainty that it was a bad solder joint where the tinsel leads meet the voice coil leads at the tripple joint... It would have created a ton of heat in one localized spot and lead to that fire...

Couldn't overexcursion tear the leads enough to still leave them connected but be in bad enough shape to cause a hot spot?

I want some marshmellows
