I would recommend ported. The output difference is substancial.

The shop where I'm going to have everything done, actually recommended the Type R's.

They did have a single Focal 13 in a really small ported box (came that way from Focal) that sounded decent, but in the demo room everything sounded good. I guess I'll have some leeway to swap speakers and boxes in and out while I'm there, but there's the possibility of something that they might not sell, being better for my needs.

A few buddies are die hard JL guys and they're insisting that I should go with W7s but I think it's more than I need and the amp I have in mind would be too small to even drive one of them so....

I wouldn't want to even guess. But I wouldn't spend more than $250 for my first set of speakers even if i had a ton of money; i'm assuming you'd be paying more than that. Ask around here, people will give you lots of good options and you can narrow your choice down from there. But if you have your install guy put in only equipment that you supply the quote might be higher than previously stated, if he had assumed you'd be buying products from him/her.

Install is gonna cost me a case of beer and dinner, but I have to help.

Paying a little more than $250 for the splits, and less for the co-axials. I just need to figure out the subs.
