Xmax?

Nothing wrong with having high xmax, where did you hear that from?

what is the xmax on those anyway?

the new XXX has i think 54mm xmax, then say an L7 has like 15mm, xmax isnt an important number to look at when buying subs, but dont just throw it out either

Yo.

Whenever I come up to Celina, I'll show you what's up //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif...

PM: B&W_EE

He's from Celina, and next time he's up there he can show you a thing or two.

How much do you have to spend? Just for subs...

Do you have a sub amp? If not, how much do you have to spend on that?

I'll get you the best you can get for what you want to spend.

what is this, and why do some ppl think its not good to have a high xmax, i ask this because im thinking of getting a pair of eclipse aluminum SW7124-T4's, and the xmax on them seems to be a lot higher than in other subs.
Xmax multiplied by area of your cone will have alot to do with the overall output of the sub. In general the higher the xmax the higher the "potential" is for high ouput. True SPL comps is different but if you want a sub to be really loud at 30hz.....12mm Xmax will not do it but a sub with 28mm Xmax will usually own it x's 2.

not exactly, why do you think the L7's do so well in SPL comps? Plus, most comps a cars frequency is in the 50-65hz range. Now low 30's is great for street, but not comps. Xmax shows how far a woofer can throw, with keeping linear, but I still don't use it to determine which driver is louder. Too many other factors and variables to determine. Plus, usually you need alot fo power, and juice to get a driver to play to a large Xmax number.

Exactly my point. SPL cars mostly jam at 50 hz + and to reach full xmax of lets say 20mm it takes power handling like a SoloX or other subs like that....but for true streetbeating which 98% of us are into low end extension is one of the main factors and xmax plays a big role in that. I would like to see a spl comp with the freq set at 30 hz and see which subs would prevail just for the heck of it. But as far as SPL you are right...power handling, cone area and port area and a car's natural response and tuning freq all play a much bigger role than xmax. But if you want to impress sombody with late nite tip you play a XXX in a box tuned to 30hz

This thread makes me laugh.

Next time Aaron is back in Celina, he'll show you a pair of 12's off of 1200+ rms... that only cost him $250... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

They're *******.

not entirely true. You can have a woofer that can get loud, and reach full potential at 17mm and have a Sd advantage over a woofer, that will need 400 more watts on a driver that has 10mm more Xmax. If you tune the enclosuyre, if ported, in any driver, you can get pretty low, no matter what the Xmax is.

You will never drive it to its full potential, the more the cone moves I, no matter what driver , the more distortion it can and will produce..that's a given

We also get into nasty little things like power compression..amongst other things..

Displacement is a great thing, but is NOT everything..you will never ever ever listen to the driver at full boogy, if you do it will sound like, ah, blah regardless //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

All true....

there is a law of diminishing returns when it come to xmax, but I still believe that it is a very important spec in the long run. I was in Stillwater yesterday visiting your hospital, you guys need to donate some momey so next time it will say the "L7 wing" or the "Solobaric Chamber" etc!
