Simply put, it's a design that uses two magnetic gaps, and a shorter than normal coil, to optimize the amount of linear excursion. When the voice coil moves in one direction, it's essentially leaving one gap and entering the other at the same time to maintain the same BL, which in turn leads to more xmax.
