xbox live connection help

I am trying to connect my 360 to xbox live. here is my scenario we have direct tv with dsl. the dsl comes into a router in my buddies room my room is down the hall. i have a laptop with a wireless network card that i use to connect my laptop to the internet. i am trying to connect a router to the eathernet port on the laptop and connect the x box to the router. Im not sure if it can be done this way as the xbox support page says to use the router that the dsl modem comes into. anyways i test my xbox live connection on the xbox and it can see that i am wired and it gets an ip address but the DNS test fails. would anyone know what i need to do to get this method to work? has anyone done this before?

i have not nor do i know how to do that. i have some skills with computers and networking but i dont know how to do that.
