WTF would this mean??

if it's linksys, you can actually adjust it.
maybe it just got f'ed with by accident?

Or maybe it automatically cut your signal down to avoid people from getting on?

IMO, secured networks are a PITA. a better way to do it, is to restrict the IP adressed that can log on, and limit it to 1 connection per IP, so cloning isn't an issue.
and yes its a linksys,, just the basic wireless g w speed booster( didnt really care about the speed booster, just got the wireless deal from buying that router )

direct your browser to "192.168.0.1"
put it in your address bar like a web page.

then type "admin" as your password

then you'll have all sorts of controls
my router ip address had to be changed because of my modem.. now it slike192.168.1.285

and then in advanced wireless settings you can adjust the range, and other such sillyness if you see fit.
ok thanks .. Im in wireless mac filter .. I hope were talkin about the same thing here..

It says wireless mac filter .. enable.. or disable

ya, and you can enter in a whole bunch of addresses, correct?

i don't remember how to find your computer's mac address....

may want to google that.

but that will restrict other computers from getting on, without a whole lot of effort.

they'd have to somehow find out your mac address, and then clone it with a proxy server......

nobody's gonna do that if you just have residential bandwidth.

much security beyond that's really only important for businesses who pay hundreds a month for huge bandwidth.

Wireless MAC Filters

The Wireless MAC Filters feature allows you to control which wireless-equipped PCs may or may not communicate with the Router's depending on their MAC addresses. To disable the Wireless MAC Filters feature, keep the default setting, Disable. To set up a filter, click Enable, and follow these instructions:

1. If you want to block specific wireless-equipped PCs from communicating with the Router, then keep the default setting, Prevent PCs listed from accessing the wireless network. If you want to allow specific wireless-equipped PCs to communicate with the Router, then click the radio button next to Permit only PCs listed to access the wireless network.

2. Click the Edit MAC Filter List button. Enter the appropriate MAC addresses into the MAC fields.

Note: For each MAC field, the MAC address should be entered in this format: xxxxxxxxxxxx (the x's represent the actual characters of the MAC address).

3. Click the Save Settings button to save your changes. Click the Cancel Changes button to cancel your unsaved changes. Click the Close button to return to the Advanced Wireless screen without saving changes.
