WOW! look at this wire!

the old copper power lines were normally 6 guage. The newer and cheaper aluminum usually run between 2 and 2/0. transmission lines in the 345kV and up class use 4/0.
I've seen bigger copper and aluminum wires. The underground wires the place I worked for were generally either 350 MCM or 500 MCM, all bigger than 4/0.

 
If you go to a recycling center you can usually bump into electricians that strip it down and recycle it for cash. You can tell them you'll buy it off of them for as much as they get for recycling it, and they don't have to strip it down. I beleive 1200mcm was the biggest I have heard of. And no you cannot bent that stuff easy, It's nearly impossible to bend a 1' cut of it. I keep a 2' peace under the seat of my car for a billy club.
It makes sense that 1200 MCM is about the biggest since this is for AC power at some point the skin effect will take over and any extra thickness will be useless.
