I'd avoid kicker all together - take a look around the classifieds, read up on the forums, keep asking for suggestions before you buy anything, read up on the forums, then when you think you're about ready to buy something, read some more.

not sure if you're capable of building it yourself, but I'd do 2 15" AQ SDC2.5 and AQ1200D. $1k should cover subs, amp, wiring, and building materials.

Great advice for a good starting system, but with $1000, you could do a lot more.

Also take a look into a pair of DC Level 3's and Incriminator Audio Lethal Injections. They're in the same price range, and it'll give you a better idea of what else is out there.
