I don't disagree that I should have some sort of punishment for being late but I believe hosiptialization is a valid reason no matter where you work, especially when I can verify it.

get your probation transferred, tell you PO that you need a fresh start and need to get out of dodge, it takes a few months but you should be able to get it done...
