Wiring trouble

I'm trying to run my 2 Pioneer TS-W126DVC subs that are dual 4ohm VC's off of a MTX Thunder 502 2ch amp for a little bass until i get my new amp. I've wired it like on this diagram but when I turn it up half way it starts to cut out and get's a little distorted. Did I wire these right or is there a better way to wire them?

Is your amp clipping? How high do you have the gains set?

At first that's what I thought was the problem, but I've just been messing with the gains by ear. I either get good bass or no bass. When I do get bass as soon as I turn it up half way it starts cutting out. If I wired it correctly and it's doing that maybe it is the gains.

What is the rms rating of the amp vs. the recommended rms for the subs (sorry, I don't feel like looking them up)? If you are using low sensitivity subs you could easily drive the amp to clip as you try to achieve the volume you want.

Sorry, I've been going back and forth from the garage trying to test that bullshit out. At 4ohm it's 90rms x 2 and the speakers are 400rms. Will I damage them by under powering them like that?

I think you were right I finally got it sounding decent messing with the gains and I'm actually running them full range. Is that another thing I have to worry about damaging them with?

You aren't going to damage a sub by playing higher frequencies or underpowering it. It will probably sound like shit but you won't damage it due to the natural roll off of the driver.

(btw, this doesn't work the other way around, if you send low frequencies to tweeters you will destroy them)
