Winter Vehicle...

Winter time is here, and I need a four wheel drive. I'm not so confident with my girlfriend driving on frozen roads, especially in my town. I currently have a FWD car, which does 'ok' in the winter, and I have brand new winter treads on it. It'll drive decent, but if it goes into a ditch, or we need to go around door to door, it won't make it. We do a house check if we have more ice storms. I'm looking for either a full-size truck or SUV, no S-10 Blazer/S-15 Jimmy's, Explorers, 4Runners, Rangers, B2000, etc. I'm thinking more along the lines of F250-F350, 1500-3500 Silverados, GMC Yukons, Chevy Tahoes, Suburbans, Excursions, ect. ect. Not worried about gas mileage, as I care more about the well being of my family. Not a great budget, so I'll probably get financed. I can't go over $7,500. What would you all recommend and WHY? I have access to a '79 Silverado 4x4, and a '78 International Scout, but I'm not so sure about them, mechanically.

you can get tahoes and yukons for cheap as fock now
Yeah, I found a few on Craigslist, but I'd rather buy from a lot so I can possibly get some sort of warranty.

do not get the last 2 you mentioned if you are worried. especially since your family is with you in the winter.
The only reason why I worry about them, is because of the transfer case on the Chevy it gets stuck in 4-low, and the Scout needs new light relay switches, I'm just not sure which ones. Out of them, if I have to get one, it would be the Chevy, because I don't mind having to drive 30 mph the whole way home. :p

well although trucks and suv's are perceived to be the best winter vehicles, their lack of weight over the rear wheels can be an issue if you dont use sand bags or have 4 15" subs in the back, i think that the best winter vehicle ive ever driven was a Subaru impreza, they are just designed that way, you can get an older one like early 2000's for around 7500 bucks, but if you absolutely need a full size truck or suv, my 2004 sierra does pretty good, all trucks are gonna be roughly the same so just look for a nice dependable 4x4 and you should be fine

We don't even get that much snow/ice in Missouri...

Besides, your woman won't do any better with 4wd. It'll just make her more confident and more likely to crash. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

I would much rather have a Full size SUV/Truck. The only reason is because of the house checks. I would need that room if I had to take people to the shelters, or hospitals. Plus I could haul generators, and some firewood if needed.

That's true, but we have frozen roads all the time because MoDot sucks at their jobs. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif Plus, the past 2 years, we've had pretty bad ice storms. My girlfriend would rather not drive at all, and yes it would make her more confident, but with a bigger vehicle, she would be more cautious, as she doesn't like big vehicles.
