But, the "zero-tolerance" policy resulting in the separation of families was put in place by AG Jeff Sessions in April of 2018.

"If you're smuggling a child, then we're going to prosecute you, and that child will be separated from you, probably, as required by law. If you don't want your child separated, then don't bring them across the border illegally. It's not our fault that somebody does that."

There is no law requiring separation of families. In fact, it's illegal.

In this particular discussion, it was a violation of the (IIRC) 14th Amendment.
We had a long discussion about it many pages back, and I provided links to the info, including the court cases, legal decisions, basis of decisions, etc.

There was an injunction placed referencing the illegality of the actions, and they have not been able to overturn it by proving legality.

oh, so being held up in a shelter due to your parents illegal actions is the same thing as being imprisoned?

I would argue they were neglectful for putting their children in that situation and that they are unfit parents.
