Inept is one of the best words, given the light you paint them in. Incompetent is another. Most other synonyms (inexpert, unskilled, amateurish) don't convey the right meaning.

Yes, you "get to prove that". it's called the "burden of proof", and here's a great little quote from an entire writeup about it:
