The nuclear power plants in Ukraine were all designed by Russia. That’s a big motivator to want those plants in Russian territory. That combined with a land bridge from Crimea to Russia through eastern Ukraine basically makes Russia energy independent from the rest of the world.

The state media in Russia is already using this as propaganda. According to a few people I know from Kazakhstan and Russia the general population is worked up into quite a war frenzy over there. Our politicians and their families have been plundering the former Soviet countries for decades. Every good piece of propaganda contains 80% truth, and Russia has a lot of truthful dirt on western politicians to twist not something even worse than the truth. England and A few other European countries also have politicians raking in cash in the former Soviet block. Ukraine was a cash cow for corrupt poltical/private corporation profiteers.
