You appear to think the US oil market is somehow isolated from the global market/supply. For as long as I've been alive the US (the world) time and time again goes to OPEC trying to get their cooperation on supply/price, yet you think bringing up OPEC is some sort of "muddy the waters" tactic. OPEC is probably the single largest factor in oil pricing.

I thought it was common knowledge that the two parties have migrated from their original platforms/bases and for a short time co-existed as a single party. The most obvious example of this would be that the solidly blue northeastern states were once dominated by the republican party and the solidly red states were once dominated by the democrats - to the point that it led to a civil war.
