windows create distortion?

Well just tonight i came to the conclusion that maybe my front two windows down creates some sort of distortion. I had all windows up, started my car, turned hu to 55/62 as normal. it played perfect.

I got kind of hot so i rolled down the two front windows and man it made one note in project pats-ride high off the ground sound HORRIBLE!!! i rolled the windows back up to make sure this was the reason and it was. I went home after the event i was attending and tried that same song and went and listened to the sub. It was playing the flawlessly.

Is it possible for windows to create distortion?

Can we maybe put this is the correct section? Sorry guys i think it should be in general discussion

I think with the windows down, assuming you have the same volume, the excursion of the subs has increased a bit due to the less resistance as compared to the windows up. When I mean resistance, I mean air resistance. This extra excursion may cause a little distortion coming from your speakers.

If you truly think it is the windows, you can always put sound deadener directly on the windows. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

im not really sure but maybe the song playing the note that is below tuning and the cone stays more controlled with more pressure against the front of the sub but when you open the windows it unloads and causes it to lose all that pressure that is keeping the cone controlled. im thinking it would have the same affect as having too big of a port in an enclosure and the cone getting out of control. im not sure how right this is but it may be a possibility in my mind at least.

see its in a sealed box though. i have about 500rms going to this IDQ and it says you can put 600rms to them on their site. The gain is 3/4 and i have never really heard it distort before. just a little while ago.

i figure in a 1.55cuft sealed box which is the largest recomended by image dynamic. I figure it can hit any note it wants. I have played sine sweeps, test tones, and rock music at 55/62 without any noticable distortion to my ear. I guess this is not a big deal it is only one song out of hundreds of songs i listen to so its ok. i just thought i would share what happened.

my truck is ALOT louder with the windows down
thats because you get cabin gain or something like that since you have such a small area for you sub so it cant fully excursion?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I have a big station wagon and its actually louder with the windows up cuz i hav so much space

When you roll your window down it makes your car interior act like a huge bandpass enclosure.

thats what i was thinking enzowho...like a huge 4th order i believe(i get them confused) also are you sure its the sub distorting or is it maybe some rattle from something inside with it possibly being louder with the windows down, it may vibrate something just enough so it makes a rattle and you hear it. im not sure...just throwing out ideas.

If you have a sealed sub it'll be 4th order, vented sub it'll be 6th order, but the order doesn't really matter in this case, it's the car tuning into a big resonant chamber that's the problem, unfortunatly there's not a lot you can do about it other than keeping the windows up (anything you do to prevent the cabin becoming a resonant chamber will also eliminate your bass).

Anyhow, i have the same deal (roll down the windows, increase in sound). Its due to cabin gain, and as said before, is like having a band-pass setup. A large part of the reason that at competitions, you usually have to have your windows up.
