Windows 7 faster than Vista or XP

What tweaks did you make to Vista to make it as fast as XP? Are your vista machines similar to your XP machines in performance?

Install Service Pack 1. Makes a big difference. Take off all the silly gadgets. For what starts up on the computer, use Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (download standalone EXE).

I agree with your first statement whole heartedly, Vista is full of win.
As for the file system, I am not 100% sure on that, bit I don't believe it will be any different from Vista, which is to say it will not have the new DB file system.

Well that sucks. They were supposed to get that file structure out on Vista then canned it early. It is the biggest thing I am looking for. Honestly if they can create a stable DB driven FS then all this perceived slowness people claim would be laid to rest.

Yup, disc management in Vista is awesome. I haven't thought to check in W7, I'll look when I get home.

just put the beta on a separate partition on my hard drive last night. Didn't have much time to play with it but it seemed pretty neat. I'll get to check it out a little more tonight after work.

It did fix one of the most annoying things of all Windows previous; you can use windows stacked or side by side. Sometimes I have to do research writing, so I like to have some sources open while I'm in Word. No matter how you set up your windows, when you touch one the others minimize; not anymore.

I like the active desktop also. Now I can choose as many as my favorite desktop backgrounds as I like and have them transition every hour.

Another thing was driver installation. Vista was very good with drivers, it found most after installation and automatically installed them. W7 installed all my drivers: printer, GPU, mobo, soundcard, and wireless adaptor during the 20 minute install. Everything worked out of the box, which says a lot for a 64-bit OS.

Ok, so I never gave any thought to the background that appears the first time you boot to the desktop, until I just saw it typed out, it's a Beta fish, someone at MS has a sense of humor, lol. It's kindof sad that it took me this long to get it.

I wouldn't have thought of it unless I myself had a beta

Did some testing the other night on bf2. Takes ~10 seconds less load time, uses about 8% less ram (just using my g15 keyboard to tell me ram usage) and uses about 10% more cpu power.
