Will running amp with 8 ohm load rob power?

I have an eclipse 87121 DVC 4 ohm sub and the amp I have (JBL 180.2) to power it is only capable of 360 x 1 @4 ohms. It can not be used at 2 ohms in bridged mode.

So it looks as if I will have to run it at 8 ohms since there is no way to bridge a DVC 4 ohm sub at 4 ohms.

Will running it at 8 ohms decrease the power output from the amp?

Will it work well and provide enough power?

You could wire it at 2 ohms and put it on one of the channels, or you could wire it at 8 ohms and bridge the amp.

FYI usually when you go from 4 ohms to 8 it will just cut the power output in half. It will not hurt the amp in any way.

Unfortunately that would give me only 180 RMS which is not acceptable. Anyone want to trade a JBL P 180.2 for an amp that would do the job? I also have a P 150.1 but that only gives me 150 x 1 @ 2ohms

well you could always TRY to run it at 2 ohms but just be careful to watch for negative side effects

Maybe try the amp at 2 ohms and keep the gain very low. You may be able to squeeze 300is wrms out of it on really low gain @ 2 ohms just fine.

8 ohms means your amp is only putting out 1/2 it's output vs a 4 ohm load. So yes, its working less and will not heat up as much.

RMS and MAX are totally different. Which do you mean?

IF you mean power only 1 voice coil, the answer is no. You never want to do this.

What's the exact model of the amp? GTO, Power series, LC series etc.

All I know is if you power 1 voicecoil you will damage the sub.
