Will a dry EQ solve my problems?

So I currently have a garbage Alpine HU (CDE-121), but am not in a position where I can outright replace it. My only issue with the unit is the lack of a digital EQ, and as a result of this, a total lack of mids. Would running a dry eq be a good idea, as I don't really want to replace the deck? If so, any recommendations?

This assumes you have an external amp for the speakers. If the speakers are powered by the HU an external EQ won't work.

I've used that Clarion before, it's ok.

Note that an EQ is fixing poor speaker installation/choices.
