Why the **** did my amp overheat?

Pull the dong out of your ***. I'm sorry I don't have the infinite knowledge that you have on cars or amps.
Well then don't shut down my knowledge when I'm giving you a possible cause. "my gains were set at half and that means it's not clipping" shows you don't know anything about gain. I just enlightened you on it so you can learn from in. I'm not amp god either, it's just common knowledge. Also check your ground as well but I'm willing to bet it's a gain issue.

Orion pic #2 left power inputs FIAL
The left is the speaker wire...the right side is the power/ground/remote..you can see the copper because the wire is 8-gauge and the hole for it is 4-gauge..

I'll take more pics if need be. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

shows what i know about orion amps. looked like a second input to me.

Maybe it was something to do with you living in south florida and having it cranked to full blast for an hour. with your gain too high. Do you still use an 880? If you do, you shouldn't have it that high.

I have a 9855.

Or maybe it's just hot?? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif
seems to me also like maybe the gains were too high. that 9855 has 4 volt preouts. my eclipse has 5 volt preouts and the gain on my amps are only 1/4 of the way up before i reach desired voltage.

i could see maybe if your amps were covered up (no airflow at all) and it overheating just because it was hot but they seem to have decent airflow. assuming the pic you took is how they are always sitting.

heat sometimes causes clipping and clipping will always cause heat //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I thought you sold your 9855 and got an 880. I talk to too many people off cacom lol.

But yeah, with 4v preouts, your gains should be at like 1/4 or less. I can confidently say that having your gains at 1/2 is too high. Heck my friend has a 9884 with 2v preouts and his gain is 1/3 up.

It's 1/2 way at the most..running at 4-ohm stereo....that's no excuse.
Now if the way were to be bridged, with the gain 3/4 of the way up..then yes, I would understand it overheating.
Gain is as per HU, not in general. Go use your DMM or borrow an o-scope and check.
