Having been to Doha, Qatar, and knowing that my mother-in-law vacations in Dubai, the Persian Gulf is a big tourist spot for Europeans. That was paid for with tourism money, not oil money. Pretty much other than Iraq, Iran and Saudia Arabia, most of the Persian Gulf region is pretty well Westernized and attracts a lot of tourists. It has also become a venue for major international sporting events such as major golf tournaments, tennis tournaments, F1 racing and MotoGP racing. Just because all you see is the hardline Islamic states in the news, doesn't mean that the whole region is like that.
