why ft stage only?

who goes to a movie theater with only a few speakers just in the front?
This is what I keep saying to my GF when she asks why she doent hear any back speakers in my truck, I just say, when you go to a concert, where is the music coming from... Oh yeah is what i hear //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

It certainly is a personal prefrence. One needs to realize the importance of a strong front stage. Rear fill is exactly that just fill. I use rear fill. Properly tweeked, it does not take away from a strong front stage. The concert analagy deos hold some truth, but its not the complete picture.
This.

i would use rear fill........ just fade the sound to the front a little

Theres actually 2 clarion 6.5's in the back, but with a box you cant hear them, Plus i do fade a bit front and my components fill the whole truck like they should.

I finally have my front stage sounding how I like it but I'm sure if i ever actually sat in a SQ car I would hate my setup. But it sounds great to me and thats what counts.

bingo:greedy:

everybody......... when its part of the movie soundtrack. i woulda been pissed if i saw 'i,robot' or 'king kong' with only 2-4 speakers in the front and nothing else
You know **** well I mean music solely. Don't play coy. Music isn't generally recorded with rear information(save for some good live DVD audio), so it seems futile to matrix it from the info available. It is all preference though. Your theater analogy just doesn't quite fit as any movie has surround info in the recording. When listening to a band they don't generally stage their instruments all around you. In the end though if people like it then go with it.

Exactly. we cant try to compare what HT should sound like to car audio.

i want to get a really nice fairly loud playing sq system, but would rather not take up any room in the trunk for a sub...just a thought on the rear 6x9 thing
My front speakers played down to 30hz on their own, even when high passed at 50hz. I didn't need rear speakers and I still don't. They really mess with imaging if run full range and it can become very annoying. Some people like them and others don't. I will never run them again as it just pulls everything behind me.

I would also never do it to "please" my rear passengers as I HATE riding in the back of somebody's car with their rear speakers yelling in my ear. I instantly want out and to drive my own car. There is nothing enjoyable about having one speaker 8" from your ear and playing very loudly.

Yes it does, I dont think people realize how much of a difference midbass makes in music enjoyment, esp in a car.
WrenchGuy, im a lil envious, I would really like to try a 3 way setup at some point in the near future just to hear the differences compared to a normal 2 way setup.
I would just go 3 way if you want an "emphasized" midbass region. I guess if your gonna go 3 way using 7" and 8" would be cherry. I mean if your gonna do the work might as well go big in the door.....lol Thats me though.

2 ways are just as well and sometimes better varying with vehicles.

To me, having rear fill is like listening to headphones in your car. If you like that, then add rear speakers. It just sounds like you have music inside your head. But only running a front stage, well obviously if set up right it can sound like you are at a live concert and you can pick out each instrument as if the band was playing on your dash...

There's a huge difference between rear speakers and rear fill. Running rear speakers (typically 6x9 coaxes) amped to match the front speakers without any processing will totally kill the imaging, staging and frequency response. Properly set up rear fill, is just that though: fill. It should be filtered (high and low pass), attenuated (you shouldn't be able to tell that there is sound coming from behind you), delayed (you are trying to recreate the ambiance from a large room) and mono (any stereo separation is lost during the reflection off the rear wall of the "room"). Without considering those things, it just won't sound right. The train of thought with this type of setup is that you are trying to recreate a home STEREO (not theater) and the room that it is in in your car.

I subscribe to a different school of thought that says "any ambiance will be captured on the recording, and by adding any of my own I'm deviating from the concept of 'high fidelity'." For that reason I don't run rear speakers, though I migh be doing a 5.1 system in the next vehicle which is a whole different shooting match.
